Importance of a Custom Fitness Program
One secret to success with a custom fitness program in the gym that most people don't follow through on is developing a truly customized program that is designed to maximize your own personal progress and results so that you meet your unique objectives and goals. All too often, it seems that people latch onto very broad or generic workout programs, or they simply spend their time doing things which aren't aligned with what they're trying to achieve. Every person out there is different. They are different in terms of body composition and overall body type. They are different in their experience, skill or comfort level in the gym, their previous injuries, their age and background, their current level of fitness, and more. All of these different people want to achieve different and specific goals. So why do so many of us try to do the exact same thing in the gym that we see somebody else doing?
If you're not a bodybuilder or an NFL player, why are you training like a person who has the body and background? If you need to lose 10 lbs and not 100 lbs, the exercises you do and the format of your workout could and should be different. If you're 6'5" and have never been able to put on muscle mass on your skinny frame, why would you approach your workout with the same game plan as your 5'10" friend who has always been thickly muscled but has never been able to trim his excess fat? A custom fitness program will be able to revolutionize what you're doing, how you approach your training and the immediate impact and results of the time you spend working out. In order to design one, or get help designing one, you first need to think about several different factors and identify how they affect you personally. First, you have to identify your goals. What are you trying to achieve? The more specific you answer this question and define your goals, the better off you'll be. Not only is this a key indicator of maintaining motivation and work ethic, it also will help you refine a custom fitness program that really is honed in and what you're looking to do. Therefore, "getting in shape" isn't a great goal. But losing 20 lbs of fat in 4 months before your vacation is a successful, fine-tuned and specific goal, for example. Second, you have to identify your strengths and weaknesses, along with the other specific factors that make up you and your body. What type of body do you have, which of your muscles are in the best and worst condition right now, what can't you do because of injury or what do you need to do in order to avoid injury? By thinking about all of these unique factors and circumstances in conjunction with your goals, you can develop a specific and expertly crafted custom fitness program. It will be designed for you and you alone, and to help you achieve your goals. It might not be the sexy thing to think about a workout program and begin training obscure sounding muscle groups in order to fix biomechanical issues or muscle imbalances so that you can achieve your grander goals. But it's the kind of strategy which often produces the best results, and that's why identifying all of your unique circumstances and goals is so important. For example, if you've been training your chest two times a week every week, but haven't completed a back exercise in years, then you're setting yourself up for plateaus with your training, but also potential injury due to those imbalances. It wouldn't be recommended that you jump right into the same kinds of exercises with the same weights that somebody who has a more balanced body would be recommended to do. The same goes for all of these types of muscle pairs, like biceps and triceps, or quadriceps and hamstrings, or abdominals and lower back core muscles. The bottom line is that custom fitness programs are a key component in your overall success at the gym. No matter what your own goal or objective is, you're training has to be designed to reach that. You have to account for your body type, your starting point, your strengths and weaknesses and more. When you do all of this, you'll be following a highly successful formula designed to maximize results, and you'll finally start moving ahead and reaching your goals instead of floundering around.
